Defense Minister Ehud Barak denied, Monday morning, reports that a calm in the Gaza area had been achieved via negotiations with the Islamic Jihad terror group. Interviewed by Israel Defense Forces Radio, Barak said, "There was no negotiation. It's true that we received news and messages that these [entities] want to stop. We don't respond to these messages in their own right. In our eyes, Hamas is responsible for all that happens in Gaza."
Barak added, "There is no basis to the accusations as if we are being pulled [into the fighting] and not initiating. Those that call on us to attack with force in the Strip will be the first to criticize us when we encounter difficulties there."
