IDF Marks 20th Anniversary of Gorodish Death

A memorial service is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at the military cemetery in Kiryat Shaul to mark the 20th anniversary on the Hebrew calendar of the passing of General Shmuel Gonen, who was also known as Gorodish.

Awarded the Medal of Courage for his efforts in the 1956 Sinai campaign, he oversaw the introduction of the British made Centurion tank into the Israel Defense Forces. Gorodish replaced Ariel Sharon as commander of the Southern District in July 1973 but was replaced by Chaim Bar-Lev on the fourth day of the Yom Kippur War, following failures in the first days of the war that led to condemnation by the Agranat Commission's interim report on IDF shortcomings. He was relieved of command until publication of the commission's final report, but left the service in 1974.
