Report: IDF to Recommend Concessions to Abbas

The opinion is developing in the Israel Defense Forces that Israel must make gestures to the Palestinian Authority (PA) to compensate for the damage done to the status of the Fatah faction by last week's release of prisoners in exchange for soldier Gilad Shalit, according to a Monday morning report by Ha'aretz. The report says the military will submit recommendations to the political echelon next month that include the release of more PA prisoners, sending the bodies of terrorists to the PA and handing more security authority to the PA in Judea and Samaria.

The newspaper says the government will not be quick to accept the recommendations as a way to punish the PA for its initiative to be recognized as a sovereign state by the United Nations. It quoted an advisor to Prime Ministery Binyamin Netanyahu as saying, "We don't want the collapse of the Palestinian Authority, but if it happens, it won't be the end of the world."
