Platoon Commander Dismissed over Kusra Incident

The Israel Defense Forces announced, Sunday that they dismissed a platoon leader, two weeks ago, following an investigation into a rock attack on the platoon on September 23rd, the Friday that Mahmoud Abbas presented the Palestinian Authority statehood proposal to the United Nations General Assembly. The platoon commander was also removed from combat duty.

The attack came after the platoon broke up clashes between residents of the Samarian Arab community of Kusra and the nearby Jewish community of Esh Kodesh. The force tried to use tear gas to break up the attack but the hail of rocks from short range was so heavy that the commander was obligated to ask for permission to open fire to combat the life threatening situation. A 34-year-old resident of Kusra died as a result of the fire.
