Assad Replaces Two Governors

Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad on Sunday replaced governors in two regions where rebel activity demanding an end to his regime has been especially strong. Replacements have been named for the governors, and security forces were immediately sent out to quash several protests that were developing, witnesses said.

Some 3,000 people, including 1,100 soldiers and police officers, have been killed in the uprising in Syria, which began last March.
