Committee to Discuss Increasing Criminal Sentences

A committee considering a significant increase in the terms and conditions of punishment meted out to  criminals will meet on Sunday. The committee is chaired by former High Court judge Dalia Dorner, and will compare the sentences for hardened criminals in Israel to those in other countries, with the aim of bringing Israel's sentencing structure -considered by many to be far more lenient than in many other places – in line with others in the West.

The committee was formed in the wake of criticism by the government and legal system of the light punishments often given to organized crime figures, and its goal is to increase personal safety, committee members said.
