Abbas Not Giving Up on Statehood Bid
Mahmoud Abbas, the chairman of the Palestinian Authority, told reporters in Egypt on Saturday that even if negotiations with Israel were to resume, he would still pursue his unilateral bid for a Palestinian state at the United Nations. Abbas reiterated his demand that such a future state would be in the 1967 borders, which would include at least half of Jerusalem, and all of Judea and Samaria. In the past Abbas and other PA officials have called for a forced removal of all Jewish residents of Judea and Samaria.
The Israeli government issued a statement calling for direct talks without preconditions between the two sides.
