Protests by Israelis against high food prices have apparently had the desired impact: Prices for a typical food basket sank 2.6% in September. This was a sharp reversal of a trend of prices rises. Since 2008, food prices in Israel have shot up 14% on average.
So far, food prices on average in 2011 are up only half a percent since the beginning of the year, with sales up 1.8% over the same period in 2010.
