74 Lashes for Insulting Ahmadinejad

A former Iranian student who sent an angry letter to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad received 74 lashes with a whip, apparently for not using the proper greeting at the beginning of his letter of criticism.

Britain's the Guardian reported that Aref's flogging came at the end of a one-year sentence for propaganda against the state for speaking to foreign media about Ahmadinejad's disputed win in the 2009 elections. Aref was among about 150 students who were not allowed to continue their studies because of his criticism. He was also banned from working as a journalist or joining a political party.
