Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz told student leaders, Thursday, that he was instructing all public transportation operators to sell 50-percent-discount passes to students who regularly take the bus in time for the start of the college and university year in November. The new program will expand a program that currently applies a discount only in the immediate area of a school. The student or annual passes will go on sale starting on October 23rd.
The idea was one of the recommendations of the Trajtenberg Committee on socioeconomic change, which is yet to be adopted by the government. Under the recommendation, the change, if approved, would not have gone into effect before 2012.
