Member of Knesset Otniel Schneller (Kadima) said, Tuesday, that he would do what he could, to keep the Binyamin-region Jewish community of Givat Assaf from being destroyed as part of any agreement reached with the Palestinian Authority. He said his efforts would include involving Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu in finding a solution to the issue.
Schneller's comments came at the end of a tour of the 10-year-old community and meetings with its residents, accompanied by National Union party chairman Ya'akov Katz. Knesset Member Katz made it clear that it was not a purely local issue, but one that put the future of thousands of families in doubt, as the same threat hangs over families in nearby Migron, Beit El and other communities. Community representatives said it was a policy matter and not a legal one, and that they were prepared for a firm struggle, asking for the public's support.
