The Bituach Le'umi National Insurance Institute (NII) announced, Monday, that it payed out 2.3 billion shekels for maternity leave in 2010. The 103,000 women who received the benefit represented 62 percent of the total number giving birth in the country. 360 men who split the time with their wives also collected. The NII distributed 177 million shekels among 167,000 mothers to cover the first expenses of the new arrivals. About 10,000 women received grants to deal with complications in pregnancy
The biggest group of women giving birth was in Jerusalem and its surroundings, who received 18.1 percent of the grants, followed by the Be'er Sheva area at 9.3 percent. The Ramle branch of Bituach Le'umi was third at 7.5 percent, followed by Petach Tikva at six percent. 3,994 births involved twins and 105 births involved three or more babies.
