Rivlin: Pollard Punishment Heavier than Usual for US

Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin wrote a letter to Vice President Joe Biden of the United States on Sunday, following Biden's statement that if it were up to him, Jonathan Pollard would remain in prison all his life for passing classified information to Israel. Pollard has been behind bars since 1985 and is serving a life sentence for passing information to an ally, while others who have passed information to U.S. enemies in recent years - including information that has led to the killing of American agents - have served no longer than four years.

In his letter to Biden, Rivlin wrote that Pollard, "has been jailed for a long period of years and is serving a heavy sentency by any standard, far beyond the accepted norms in the United States." Earlier in the day, the Likud lawmaker had said that the Pollard case had become absurd, "by any universal standards, human and legal."
