Official: NATO Could Leave Libya Soon

The NATO mission in Libya is nearly complete, says Army Gen. Carter Ham, head of U.S. Africa Command. In an interview, Ham said that NATO could end the mission at any time, even though Muammar Qaddafi has not yet been captured, and some of his forces remain entrenched in key areas. The new government of Libya, he says, has “reasonable control” of the country, and NATO's mission was increasingly unnecessary.

"We don't want to go from what's there now to zero overnight," Ham said. "There will be some missions that will need to be sustained for some period of time, if for no other reason than to offer assurances to the interim government for things like border security, until such time that they are ready to do all that themselves,” he added.
