Various bodies are concluding preparations for an estimated 1.5 million worshippers and other visitors who are expected to come to the Western Wall Plaza opposite the retaining wall of the Temple in Jerusalem's Old City between the eve of Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year) Wednesday evening, and the end of Shemini Atzeret/Simchat Torah, about three weeks later.
A coordinating session was held this week between high-ranking police officials from the Old City and members of the Western Wall Heritage Fund. It covered the deployment of police and other security forces, ushers, sanitation for the area and preserving its unique character. The mechitza, separating the men's and women's prayer area, will be extended to the upper area of the plaza. Sukkot will be erected as well.
