Ateret Cohanim: Thumbs Up for Police

The security officer of the Ateret Cohanim yeshiva in the Moslem Quarter of Jerusalem's Old City told Knesset members from the National Union, Sunday afternoon, that Jerusalem police were investing energy in safety for Jewish residents of the area with noticeable results. Meir Tal said there were widespread efforts against those who attacks Jews in the eastern part of Jerusalem, noting nightly arrests and a significant reduction in the number of incidents.

Rank-and-file residents of the area painted a different picture, describing beatings, being spat on and a growing sense of insecurity, adding that the situation was deteriorating because the police's hands were tied. The Knesset members asked for details to take to Public Security Minister Yitzchak Aharonovich.
