Peres: UN Declaration 'Will Foster False Hope'

President Shimon Peres told a conference in Ukraine Friday that Israel believed in the two state solution, coming as the result of direct talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority. Peres said at the Yalta European Strategy forum that declarations of the United Nations on a PA state later this week, if any, would be “empty of content and foster false hopes” without direct talks. Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, who personally invited Peres to the conference, said that his country was following the developments at the UN, and would side with nations and groups advocating direct talks.

Witnesses said that Turkey's European Union Affairs Minister Egemen Bağış, also attending the conference, walked out when Peres came up to the podium.
