In an interview with Army Radio Sunday, Palestinian Authority negotiator Nabil Sha'ath said that the PA could not recognize Israel as a Jewish state, because “22% of the people in Israel are not Jewish, and it is their state too.” Sha'ath said that “the Jewish people have made their own definition” and that the PA had no say in the matter.
If so, Sha'ath was asked, what about comments made by PA officials that no Jews would be allowed to live in a PA state? Sha'ath said that he had “checked those comments, and I found that they were inaccurate. No Palestinian official said this. What they said was exactly what [Defense Minister Ehud] Barak said, that at the beginning of our state the two populations should be separated.” When asked whether he would agree to allowing current Jewish residents of Judea and Samaria to remain in their homes, he said “if they act like all other citizens and buy the land and accept Palestinian citizenship, why not?”
It should be noted that the penalty for selling land to Jews in the Palestinian Authority is death.
