The United States is working to obtain a majority vote against the planned Palestinian Authority bid before the UN Security Council for recognition of an Arab state in Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem. In order for the PA's state to be recognized as a member of the UN, nine of the fifteen nations on the Security Council must approve the measure. Currently, there are said to be 8 nations in favor and 6 opposed, and the U.S. is working to convince officials of the deciding country to oppose the PA's bid.
Diplomats said that the U.S. preferred to obtain a vote against the bid rather than use its veto, but in any case it would veto the bid, the diplomats said.
