Senior Mubarak Associates Get Jail Time, Fines

A Cairo criminal court sentenced two associates of former president Hosni Mubarak to ten years in jail and fined each of them 660 million Egyptian pounds ($110 million) on corruption convictions, Thursday. A third defendent was sentenced to 15 years in jail and fined 1.414 billion pounds (almost $236 million)

The identical sentences went to Ahmed Ezz, a senior member of Mubarak's National Democratic Party and former director Amr Assal, who headed Egypt's Industrial Development Agency. Assal was convicted of working with the third suspect, fugitive former foreign-trade minister Rashid Mohamed Rashid, to get permits for Ezz to operate factories in the Suez free trade zone in violation of regulations, according to Agence France Presse, which said it was the third verdict against Rashid.
