Report: No Rabin Memorial Observance This Year

The Rabin Center has decided not to hold its memorial observance to mark the anniversary of the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin, according to a Monday report in the Ma'ariv daily. The official reason given was renovations taking place at Rabin Square in Tel Aviv, where the murder took place, but sources at the center said that the lack of donors and funds for the observance was the reason, coupled with concern over a lack of participants in the wake of this year's social-justice demonstrations.

Interviewed by Kol Yisrael government radio, Shimon Sheves, who headed the Prime Minister's Office under Rabin, criticized the decision, calling the observance essential and promising to do what he could to make sure it takes place.
