Director-General Sar-Shalom Gerbi of the National Civilian Service Administration welcomed, on Thursday, a decision by El Al Israel Airlines to make veterans of the program eligible to apply for jobs as flight attendants. The decision followed Gerbi's intervention in the case of a National Service veteran whose application to El Al had been rejected because of the airline did not consider her two years of volunteering with the Magen David Adom emergency service as fulfillment of the requirement that applicants have two years' job experience or full military service.
In a letter to El Al chief Eliezer Shakdi, Gerbi wrote that National Service volunteers perform a variety of duties and their contribution is no less than that of those doing compulsory military service. A few days later, two years in the National Civilian Service was added to the criteria for acceptance to flight attendant school. He expressed hope that other bodies would also end their discrimination against National Service participants.
