A Muslim man from Jaljuliya was sentenced to four months' probation Tuesday for practicing polygamy. The man married a second wife five years ago, and has split his time between two households since.

He told the court that he took a second wife because he and his first wife were unable to have children.

Polygamy is illegal in Israel, but remains common practice in several sectors of society, among them Bedouin Muslims and Black Hebrews, and is rarely punished. Those found guilty of multiple marriage can be sentenced to up to five years in prison.
