High Court Calls Chief to Explain Unit's Breakup

A three-judge panel of the Supreme Court, headed by Court President Dorit Beinisch, decided, on Monday, to summon Police Commissioner Yochanan Danino and the head of the department's investigative branch to explain why the department is dissolving the Sa'ar unit, which deals in the exploitation of foreign workers among other aspects of human trafficking.

During a hearing on an appeal by Knesset member Orit Zuaretz and others against the dissolution of the unit, Justice Beinisch said that while the court believed, in principle, that the decision was in the hands of the police chief, it appeared to be a mistake, asking if now was the time to break up the unit, given its accomplishments. Zuaretz welcomed the move, saying now that the unit has been dissolved, victims don't have a mouthpiece or a place to turn. She expressed hope that the court's decision will help the police take back its decision.
