Member of Knesset Nachman Shai (Kadima) called, on Monday, for an urgent meeting of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee to discuss Israel's relations with Turkey, in the wake of Monday's detention of Israeli business travellers at Ataturk Airport in Istanbul. In a letter to Committee Chairman Shaul Mofaz, Dr. Shai wrote, "In the absence of foreign policy and a foreign ministry, Israel fails, time after time, at the most important crossroads of its foreign relations. Responsible and prudent management could have calmed Israeli-Turkish relations."
The former military spokesman continued, "A responsible adult is needed to cool things off and pinpoint the dangers which are pulling Israel into complete international isolation." He noted that September 2011 is, by consensus, one of the most critical months for Israel's foreign affairs and security.
