Contingency Plans for Intern, Resident Resignations

Chief Executive Officer Ronnie Gamzu of the Health Ministry instructed managers of the nation's hospitals, Sunday evening, to prepare contingency plans for the mass resignation of interns and residents who are dissatisfied with the collective bargaining agreement approved last week by the Israel Medical Federation. The plans would be made with reference to the duty rosters, operations plans and other parameters relating to the functioning of hospitals.

Dr. Gamzu said, "Our moral obligation is to prevent further suffering of the patients, who have been harmed enough for the half year from disruptions in the system, and to allow the system stability." He stressed, "The health system needs the interns," and called on them to express their protest through all legitimate alternative ways, just that their dedicated work and functioning in the wards not be disrupted.
