Ayalon to Spain: Don't Support PA Recognition

Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon told Spanish Foreign Minister Trinidad Jimenez, Thursday, that moral and responsible countries cannot support the Palestinian Authority's unilateral bid for recognition as a sovereign state. During a conversation in Madrid, Ayalon told Jimenez, "We expect European countries in general and Spain in particular not to cooperate with the Palestinians' irresponsible unilateral steps, and instead, to encourage them to return to the bargaining table."

Ayalon thanked Jimenez for her clarification on Spain's position that it has not changed its stance and that it expects that any resolution of Israel-PA issues include preservation of Israel's security and return to negotiations. Earlier in the week, Jimenez said Spain could support the PA bid for statehood. During a consultation at the Foreign Ministry, Spanish ambassador Alvaro Iranzo said had been taken out of context, and that Jiminez had meant that Spain would only support the PA's bid if it was phrased in a balanced way and addressed those two points.
