PA Officially Announces UN Statehood Bid for Sep. 20th
Palestinian Authority Foreign Minister Riyad Al-Maliki announced Saturday that on September 20th, the PA will ask the United Nations for recognition as an independent state. He said a formal request will be submitted by PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas to the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon.
In 1988 Yasser Arafat, head of the PLO, the forerunner of the PA, declared an independent State of Palestine.
The Palestinian Authority was created in 1993 through the Oslo Accords agreement. The PA currently controls all of the Arab populated cities in Judea and Samaria.
