The Obama administration has widened its economic sanctions on Syria. The Commercial Bank of Syria and Syrian telecommunications company Syriatel have both been added to a list of businesses that U.S. businesses may not trade with.
U.S. officials said they are hoping to cause Syrian President Bashar Assad, a member of the Alawite sect, to lose support among Syria's business class, which is largely Sunni Muslim.
