Austria to Halt Currency Paper Deliveries to Syria

Austria announced Monday that it would no longer supply paper for the Syrian government's currency. Syria prints its currency on high-quality specie paper supplied by Austria, but on Monday, the Austrian Foreign Ministry said that it had decided to set aside a contract with Damascus, and would suspend deliveries of the paper.

Austria said that it had made the decision in light of the violence by Syrian soldiers against civilians demonstrating against the regime of dictator Bashar al-Assad. Austria signed the contract with Syria three years ago, and is supposed to supply Damascus with a total of 600 million specie sheets, which are to be used for printing up Syrian Liras.
