The Emet 9 organization of New York, which promotes charitable acts and other Jewish observance, has posted a petition on its website, asking Jews to observe at least one Sabbath before the Jewish New Year. The focus of the group is Friday night and Saturday, September 9th and 10th, corresponding to the 11th of the Jewish month of Elul.
According to the petition website, "By coming together as one people as we did at Mt. Sinai we can only hope to annul any Heavenly decrees that may befall us in the upcoming months. It has been foretold that there will be calamities that are going to happen to Israel and Jews all over the world." Organizers say, "Help us change the decree as we do have the power to redirect the destiny of Israel and the Jewish people!"
