PA Going to the UN, With or Without Talks

Senior members of the Palestinian Authority said Thursday that senior negotiator Saeb Erekat and senior official Nabil Abu-Rudeinah will travel to Washington, soon, to discuss American proposals to return the PA and Israel to the bargaining table but that talks won't stop the PA's initiative to turn to the United Nations for recognition as a sovereign state in September. The officials spoke at the end of a two-day meeting of the committee monitoring the Arab peace initiative, which dealt with efforts to gather international support for the recognition and UN membership.

The senior members of the PA said that Israel and the United States are both trying to block the application to the UN. PA Foreign Minister Riyadh Malachi said that turning to the UN was a strategic decision.
