Italy Weighs Burka Ban

Italy is considering instituting a law that would ban the burka. A parliamentary commission gave its approval Tuesday to a bill that would prevent people from veiling their faces in public areas.

The law would also impose a heavy fine and up to a year in jail on those who force women to cover their faces in public.

France and Belgium have banned the wearing of garments that cover the face in public. The laws have faced opposition from Muslim groups, many of which see them as targeting the Muslim community.
