The U.S. House of Representatives approved on Monday the deal to raise the debt ceiling, a day before the deadline.
269 representatives voted in favor of the plan and 161 opposed it. The passage of the plan by the House cleared the way for the Senate to approve it.
Reuters reported that one of the participants in the vote was none other than Representative Gabrielle Giffords, who returned to the House floor for the first time since she was shot in the head in January.
Giffords, a Democrat who had not been to Washington since the shooting, returned to vote in favor of the bill and reportedly caught the chamber by surprise. According to the report, she received a thunderous ovation from Democrats and Republicans alike.
