France will transfer money on deposit in French banks by the Libyan government to the cause of Libyan rebels. The money, amounting to some $259 million, was frozen months ago, when protests against Libya first broke out earlier this year.

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said that the rebels had promised to use the money for humanitarian purposes, honoring the wishes of the European Union.
