Minister Katz: Lower Tax on Diesel

After the government decided Sunday night to roll back the excise tax on gasoline, keeping the price at current levels for at least a month, Transport Minister Yisrael Katz called on the government to lower the tax on diesel fuel as well. Katz said that increases in the cost of diesel would be even more damaging to the cost of living than increasing the price of regular gasoline, since most trucks use diesel fuel, and would pass on the extra cost to supermarkets other retail outlets – who would promptly pass those costs on to consumers.

If the cost of diesel is not lowered, he added, his Ministry would have no choice but to increase the cost of taxi rides by 5%. Public transportation costs would have to be increased as well, he added.
