Syrian Tanks Storm Hama

Dozens of tanks stormed the Syrian city of Hama Sunday, after having remained outside the city for over a month, keeping the city in a state of semi-siege. The tanks fired shells at dozens of buildings, destroying many of them and killing dozens, witnesses said. The witnesses spoke surreptitiously by cellphone, as nearly all journalists have been expelled.

Some 30,000 people were said to have been killed in Hama in 1982 when Hafez al-Assad, the father of current dictator, Bashar al-Assad, attempted to put down a rebellion in the city.
