The Honenu legal rights organization said Thursday that 15 youths had been arrested at the Tomb of Joseph in Shechem Wednesday night. The group said that the youths had attempted to enter the tomb in order to pray, together with some other 1,200 worshippers, but that police had hauled them off the bus they came in on and detained them. Police said that the arrests were preventive in nature, as they suspected that the youths would “upset the public order” if they were allowed to visit the site. A fracas broke out, as the youths attempted to move forward to the site, and police arrested them. Honenu said that the youths were then taken to various spots in Samaria and “dumped” there.
Honenu also said that police beat several female worshippers who did not immediately vacate the site when ordered to. They were violently removed. Police claimed that only one person was arrested, and that no one was beaten.
