U.S. Congressman Peter King said Wednesday that at least 40 Americans have gone to Somalia to join the Al-Qaeda -affiliated Al Shabab terrorist group. Authorities had believed that only 21 people had gone to Somalia to help the terror group. Several of the recruits were being trained by Al Qaeda’s offshoot in Yemen, King said.
King, who is chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, said at a meeting of the committee Wednesday that “Not Al Qaeda, nor any of its other affiliates, has come close to drawing so many American Muslims and Westerners to jihad.”
