Abbas Supports 'Popular Struggle'

Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas said Wednesday that he supports a popular struggle but not an armed struggle, the PA-based WAFA news agency reported.

In a speech he gave to members of the PLO Central Council in Ramallah, Abbas referred to the popular struggle against the Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria and the separation fence, and made it clear that he supports a popular, daily, unarmed and wide-ranging struggle.

Abbas added that the PA intends to turn to the UN Security Council to ask for a state and received a standing ovation from the crowd. He noted, however, that turning to the UN is not an alternative to negotiations and said that the PA prefers negotiations.
