At least 70 people were injured during a mass demonstration that took place in Cairo on Saturday night. Protesters demonstrated against the manner in which the military government is progressing towards free elections. Protesters outside the Egyptian Defense Ministry threw stones at security personnel and blockaded roads. Soldiers attacked the crowd, firing shots in the area and spraying tear gas.
In a television address, current Egyptian head of government Field Marshall Tantawi said that the current government would “pave the way for the pillars of a democratic state, which promotes freedom, the rights of citizens through free and fair parliamentary elections, a new constitution and the election of a president chosen by the people.”
