Education Minister Gideon Saar on Thursday announced that the summer vacation will be shortened starting in the 2012 school year.
However, in order to resolve the legal issue raised by Teachers’ Union that under a collective agreement, teachers are entitled to a certain number of days off per year, Saar said that already in the coming academic year students will enjoy extra vacation days between Yom Kippur and Sukkot and an additional day off during the Chanukah and Passover vacations.
As a result of the change, the 2011 school year will begin in all educational institutions in all sectors on September 1, 2011, as has been customary until now. Starting in August 2012, the summer vacation will be shortened by five days and will end on August 26. The 2012 school year will begin on August 27, 2012.
