New Bill Would Recognize Rabbinical Court Decisions

According to a new bill initiated by the Tzohar rabbinical organization and several MKs headed by MK David Azoulay (Shas), the Interior Ministry will be required to recognize judgments of the rabbinical courts which have determined that a person is a Jew.

Azoulay noted in a conversation with Arutz Sheva on Thursday that every year about 4,000 Israelis turn to the rabbinical courts but under the current law, only “an authorized court or tribunal” can contradict information obtained by the official census and which states that a person is not Jewish.

Azoulay said that the existing law has caused injustice to many people and congratulated Tzohar for the initiative. “I’m glad we had the right to correct this injustice,” he said.
