Four police officers in Jordan were arrested Sunday, after they were accused of using excessive force against protesters in a demonstration Friday where protesters demanded government reforms. The government has ordered an investigation into the incident, where protesters were kicked and beaten by police.
Police said they used “appropriate force” in their attempts to keep the peace between rival protest groups – one in favor of the government and one against. But many witnesses said that there was only one group of protesters, those demanding reform, and that police attacked the group indiscriminately. Police said that 17 officers were injured in what degenerated into a riot by Friday night; the government did not release figures on injuries to civilians.
