Gafni: Govt. Can't Intervene in Enrollment

The government should not intervene in enrollment in hareidi-religious schools, despite the problem of schools that discriminate against Sephardi pupils, MK Moshe Gafni said Wednesday. “[Discrimination] is a serious problem and we must find a solution,” he said. “But on the other hand, the Ministry of Education cannot interfere.... Today the Ministry of Education intervenes here, tomorrow somewhere else.”

Gafni said that he has been personally involved in the problem for some time. “I cry with the parents” of girls who do not have a place in school, he said. He called on principals to work together to solve the problem, saying, “Each one is worried about his own school... No girl can be left out, we must find a place for all of them. This is not a luxury, but a matter of life or death.”
