Atias, Vilna'i Visit Tent City Site

Deputy Defense Minister Matan Vilna'i and Housing Minister Ariel Atias on Monday toured a site in the Arava where tens of thousands of Israelis would be sent to live in tents in the event of a major calamity, such as a massive earthquake or other natural disaster, or in the event of war. Water and electricity infrastructure have already been set up at the site, and the two discussed plans to store food and supply medical care at the site.

Attias said that “in this era of missiles that can easily hit the home front we need to be as prepared as possible. Even in the event of an earthquake or the like it pays to be prepared, with sites that can absorb hundreds of thousands of people for an extended period.” Vilna'i, who is responsible for homefront security in the government, said that five years after the second Lebanon war, “we need to adopt a total plan that will ensure that those who need to remain in the tent cities are able to do so in the best manner possible.”
