Moshe Feiglin, head of the Likud’s Jewish Leadership faction, said on Tuesday that hit-and-run drivers should be forced to pay damages and compensation.

Feiglin, who nearly lost his son in a car crash, told Arutz Sheva’s Hebrew language news service, “We want to ensure that if a driver drives recklessly as it was in my son’s case, then the court would allow the insurance company to force the offender to pay the amount of the claim. The driver should know he would be responsible for the consequences of his actions. These drivers will have to spend the rest of their days making those large payments. They’ll have to mortgage their salaries and their property and they will not leave the country.

“I’m sure that after two or three such cases there will be fewer car accidents,” added Feiglin. “Drivers need to realize that a car is like a loaded weapon and they will be responsible if it goes off.”
