Syrian forces shot and killed 10 people in the city of Hamas on Tuesday as protesters called on President Bashar Assad to step down. The city remains surrounded by tanks as well.

Protests against Assad's rule began in mid-March and have since grown. Assad has led Syria for 11 years, following his father, who ruled for 30 years.

Assad's father Hafez Assad notoriously killed an estimated 30,000 people in Hama in order to suppress an uprising against his regime in 1982.
