Ashrawi Hits US on UN Funding Threat

Hanan Ashrawi, a member of the executive committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, criticized United Nations Ambassador Susan Rice of the United States on Sunday, following Rice's warning that the U.S. would stop funding of the U.N. if the world body recognizes a unilaterally-declared Palestinian Authority (PA) state, according to the PA's Wafa news agency. Speaking during a visit to Austria, Dr. Ashrawi said America is ready to harm its credibility and interests to protect Israel, whose policy contradicts international law. She added that Rice's words indicated boastfulness.

Ashrawi called the PA's approach for recognition a right that does not contradict the U.N. charter. She called on Austria to recognize the proposed state and on the European Union (EU) to implement a decision which was tied to Israeli withdrawal to the 1949 cease-fire lines. She made it clear that the EU should stop being dependent on the U.S.
