Twelve human-rights groups from Israel, the Palestinian Authority and the international community are calling on Hamas to end its inhumane treatment of abducted Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, according to a Friday-morning report by Kol Yisrael government radio.

In an announcement ahead of Shabbat's fifth anniversary of the raid in which Shalit was abducted and other soldiers killed or wounded, the groups wrote that Hamas's refusal to allow Shalit contact with his family and to provide information on his physical condition and living conditions also constitute a violation of international law.
